CREATIVE ARTS CENTER RECEIVES $100,000 GRANT

The Creative Arts Center in Bonham, Texas is pleased to announce receipt of a $100,000 grant from Robert and Kay Carrel. Beginning immediately and through March 31, 2009, the grant will match dollar for dollar up to $100,000 of unrestricted cash gifts and grants received by the Creative Arts Center. Robert Self, Chairman of the Fannin Community Foundation, Inc., which operates the CreativeArts Center said, “This exciting gift will provide a jump-start for our plans to make the Creative Arts Center a magnet for the visual, performing, and literary arts in and beyond the Fannin community.”

Robert Carrel, a retired Chairman of the Foundation said, “Kay and I have been blessed with a good family and business success and we believe it is important to give back to the community a portion of the fruits of that success. We have great confidence in the new management of the Foundation. Their ‘Go-Go’ attitude has got it right. The momentum they have created will attract new ‘friends of the Arts Center’ so that its programs and growth will become sustainable over the years.”

Karin White, Director of the Creative Arts Center, said, “We have found a growing interest in art in this area. And visiting artists tell us the workrooms and galleries in the Arts Center building are a real community treasure. We finally have an ‘Art Place’ where groups of artists can come to practice their passion, swap stories and techniques, and ‘hang out’ with friends of similar aspirations and goals.”

Ms. White continued “The public comes here to sharpen its appreciation of art, to cheer the winners of judged art contests and to practice the ‘art’ of collection. This matching grant will allow the Arts Centerto field programs of interest to artists of all ages on a faster pace than we had originally planned. For example, this will permit our “Little Picassos” (pre-school and grade-school kids) to be given the instruction, tools and media with which to work in order to develop their own skills in art.”

The purpose of The Creative Arts Center is to bring the arts to an historically underserved area. The Center offers art, music, computer and photography instruction to all ages; it partners with other agencies such as museums, libraries and historical societies as well as with private collectors and recognized artists to field exhibits of interest. The galleries and workrooms of the Art Center contain regularly changing displays of hanging art, metal sculptures, ceramics and crafts, many of which are offered for sale to the public. Displayed arts and crafts provide a colorful background for private parties and receptions. The rooms may be rented for such special occasions.

Robert “Bob” Carrel is a retired electrical engineer and businessman. Kay Carrel’s passion is for horses, gardening and watercolors. Her fondness for animals and the out-of-doors comes through in her paintings.
